“Regong” is a place name in Tibetan language, meaning golden valley. Regong lies in Tongren Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of West China’s Qinghai Province. The annual Regong June Gathering is a traditional large-scale activity for worshiping gods. It is held from June 16-25 of the lunar calendar, for the purpose of worshiping gods, praying for harvest and peace, and expelling evils. Intertwined with religion, myth and history, the June Gathering has been celebrated for more than 1,400 years by Tibetans and the Tu ethnic people living in Tongren area. Various rituals, including sacrificial dances, are the most important part of the festival.
The most special and terrifying rituals in the ceremony are Mouth Sticks and Back Sticks. Mouth Stick is the Master sticks a short slender point piece of metal into the young people’s right and left cheek. It’s said that this can prevent disease from the mouth. Back Stick is the Master sticks 10-20 metals in people’s back. The topless dancers plays drums while dancing. All the people who participate in the terrifying ritual are volunteers, and the youngest volunteer is only 5 years old. They don’t think it is a pain, but is a kind of honor, so many young people are willing to be sticked metal into mouth and back.
