In Fuzhou Panda World lives the oldest panda of the world-Basi. The age ratio of panda and human is 1:4. Basi was borned in 1980, and she is 33 years old this year, which roughly equals the human age of 132 years old. The average life of the giant wild panda is only 12 years.
The hometown of Basi is Sichun in southwest China. In the early 1980s, wild arrow bamboo bloomed and died in the panda’s habitat of Sichuan Province. The arrow bamboo blooms every 60 years. It requires at least 10 years for new bamboo to grow and become edible for pandas. That placed pandas in danger of collective starvation. Basi was one of them. She was first saved by a female villager from Baoxing County when Basi was wondering lonely in a place named Basi Ditch. In 1985, under the permission of the State Council, Basi came to Fuzhou Panda World and has lived till now.
Basi is female and has been known as the “Beauty Panda,” who was chosen as the prototype for Pan Pan, the mascot of the Beijing Asian Games in 1990. In July 1987, Basi was invited to perform in San Diego, California for as long as six months, and the number of audiences reached 2.5 millions. In the meantime, she was reported as “super acrobatic animal stars actor” by more than 700 newspapers, televisions and radio stations in United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, Japan and other countries. In 1991, Basi was invited to participate in CCTV Spring Festival Gala. In 1992 and 1993, sent by the State Forestry Department, Basi had made performances in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Jinan, Beidaihe and other cities. Her performances had raised sums of funds for the implementation of the panda habitat conservation projects.
During her life, Basi has experienced several severe diseases, which almost ended her life. But luckily, she survives under the care of the staff . Now Basi still lives healthily in Fuzhou Panda World. Wish Basi both health and longevity!
